Update from Christi and Germán

We had a lovely weekend and are really enjoying our time together at home. The hospital did not have ESPN so German is glad to have all his football channels again!

We watched the concert from the livestream on Thursday night and it felt like we were there. Diego stayed up late so he could be there too. We saw many friends in the crowd and we are so thankful for everything that everyone has done for us! We can truly feel the love and good vibes coming our way :-)

On Thursday we saw German's doctor and he told us German is officially in remission. His blood counts are recovering nicely and he is now able to eat a regular diet. He was happy to eat fresh fruit again! We are meeting with the transplant doctor on Friday, November 11th to discuss the plans for his transplant. He also has an appointment with the liver specialist on the 17th so they can evaluate his liver carefully before moving to the transplant. We are very hopeful the transplant will be the next step in his treatment and will cure him of everything!

We are so grateful to share the campaign has raised $7,500 for our family! Words can not adequately express our appreciation.

Thank you for the update. This is great news! I'm glad to hear Germán is officially in remission, and that he's enjoying the time at home, and the fruits!

Germán Sarmiento necesita mucha energía positiva y el amor de su familia y amigos!

A Germán le diagnosticaron Leucemia Mieloide Aguda (LMA) a comienzos de Septiembre del 2011, solo unos meses después del nacimiento de su hijo Diego. Le hicieron tratamiento de quimioterapia agresivo después del cual el cáncer entró en remisión. Tuvo la suerte de encontrar no solo uno sino dos donantes de médula, lo cual permitió que le hicieran un trasplante rápidamente. Germán se encontraba recuperándose, comenzando a hacer deporte y a punto de comenzar a trabajar nuevamente cuando le descubrieron de nuevo un alto numero de células de leucemia en julio del 2012. Prácticamente volver a cero: debe someterse nuevamente a quimioterapia, esta vez aun más agresiva. Si se logra hacer que el cáncer entre en remisión de nuevo, se pensará en otro trasplante. Pero por el momento el objetivo es parar la leucemia. Para ello, Germán necesita mucha energía positiva, amor y ánimo.

Germán va a estar de nuevo hospitalizado durante un periodo extendido. Gilma, su mamá, estará afortunadamente con el, Christi y Diego a partir de agosto. Christi tiene la suerte de tener el apoyo de su familia, así como un empleo con la flexibilidad necesaria para poder acompañar a Germán en el hospital, al mismo tiempo que se ocupa de Diego, su casa y su trabajo. También ella necesita nuestro apoyo durante este difícil periodo.

Germán Sarmiento needs lots of positive energy and the love of his family and friends!

Germán was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) at the beginning of September 2011, just a few months after the birth of his son Diego. He underwent aggressive chemotherapy treatment after which his cancer went into remission. He was lucky enough to find not one but two bone marrow donors, which allowed him to have a transplant shortly after. Germán was recovering well, beginning to do some sport, and just about to go back to work when doctors discovered once more a high count of leukaemia cells in his blood in July 2012. This is almost like going back to square one: he must undergo a new and much more aggressive chemotherapy. If the cancer goes into remission once more, a second transplant could be necessary. But for the time being the goal is to stop the leukaemia. To do that, Germán needs a lot of good positive energy, love and encouragement.

Germán will once more be hospitalised for an extended period. Gilma, his mom, will fortunately be with him, Christi and Diego from August onwards. Christi is lucky to have the support of her family and a job that grants her the flexibility to be with Germán at the hospital, all while taking care of Diego, her home and her work. She too needs our support during this difficult period.
